Welcome to Practice Makes Perfect! First of all, I would like to thank my fabulous teacher, Mrs. Yollis, for giving permission to have my own blog. Here in my blog I will try to publish as much as possible. I will publish a multitude of posts about things I enjoy, and hopefully I will learn some interesting facts about you too. I mainly love reading, writing, playing with my dog Mazy, and playing sports. So, you will hear a lot about those hobbies.

Since I love to read, I thought that I could do a blog post on the books I've read. Books are a wonderful way to learn more. The more you read the better the books and your brain gets.
One of my favorite books is called Ruby Holler written by Sharon Creech. I love her book because Sharon uses very descriptive words when it comes to writing about the places the people are in the book. For example, to describe the woods at night Sharon says, "Out of the shadows dash creatures of all shapes and sizes: swift, diving bats and scurrying raccoons, fluttery moths and cunning bobcats. From the deepest silence erupt groans and howls, snorts and squawks, creaks and croaks." I really recommend this book to you, and I can guarantee you will love it.
Another book I recommend to you is called Crenshaw. It is written by Katherine Applegate, the Newbery Medal award wining author of The One and Only Ivan.

Crenshaw is a superb book because it is written in the point-of-view of a boy who has an imaginary friend. When Katherine writes as if she is the boy, the story gives you more detail on what is happening in his mind. For example, when a boy named Jackson finds his imaginary friend, Crenshaw, taking a bubble bath, Jackson's thoughts help explain the book. For that reason and many more, I think that Crenshaw is a fabulous book.
What are some of your favorite books?
Tell me a little bit about yourself.
Dear Soccer Girl,
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I just wanted to say congratulations writing this blog from your favorite brother.(Well, your only brother) I find your different views quite appealing. As for your question, my favorite book is probably, Miracle on Forty-Ninth Street. This book is written by Mike Lupica, a very accomplished author. It is about a girl who's mom died of cancer and is living with her friend and her family. The girls hears that basketball star, Josh Cameron is her actual father. The book is about her struggle to get him to realize it and take her in as his child.
Best,
JTS
Dear Soccer Girl,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your blog! I love the way you have set it up, and I especially like the title. Practice Makes Perfect is an appropriate idiom, especially when it comes to writing. If we practice quality writing over and over, we become a fabulous writer. I'm sure that Sharon Creech and Katherine Applegate would echo my thoughts. You don't win a Newbery Medal without a lot of practice writing!
I am enjoying reading The One and Only Ivan with the class. I feel as though Ivan is really telling the story. That is the power of perfect prose. (How do you like my alliteration?)
Do you think that you might want to be a writer when you get older? You certainly have the ability!
Your proud teacher,
Mrs. Y♥llis
Hi Soccer Girl,
ReplyDeleteI am a friend of Mrs. Yollis's and a 5th Grade English teacher in New York City. I enjoyed reading your post, especially because it reminded me to order a copy of Crenshaw for my classroom library. One of my favorite books is Wonder by R.J. Palacio. Since it seems like you are a big reader, I wonder if you have already read Wonder! If not, I highly recommend it.
Keep on blogging - you're doing a fab job so far!

Soccer Girl, I have my very own Soccer Boy in North Carolina! I am very impressed with the quality of your blog (you do a better job than my 9th grade students! I am going to dare them to do as well as you!)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite series that I am reading currently is The Unwanted series by Lisa McMann. If you love art in any form, you should check out these books!
Good luck with your blog, Soccer Girl!

ReplyDeleteCongratulations on starting your own blog - you are very lucky to have a mentor and a teacher in Mrs Yollis who will be able to help and guide you to ensure that the blog is successful and you can start to enjoy what it can bring to your writing. We are a class of students from nearly the otherside of the world in New Zealand and we are always looking for fantastic students blogs to look at and students work to read. I think it was a fantastic idea that you created your first post about books that you like because there will be readers and students who will know those books and write about them. I saw your photograph of you and your dog - another great idea because its something in common that people will be able to relate to. It will allow your work to be seen all over the world which is a fantastic way to relate to others and of course will greatly improve your writing. Good luck.

ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading about you and learning about the books you like in your blog. I love your blog title, too! Sometimes adults need to be reminded of how important practice is.
I do a lot of writing for work. Writing well will help you in so many ways. Perhaps best of all, it gives others an opportunity to see through a different set of eyes. Keep sharing your thoughts with the world!

Dear Soccer Girl,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your blog! I am so proud of you, not just for the blog but for the wonderful person you are! Being your mother, I see all of your accomplishments (and setbacks too!) as stepping stones on your life's journey. I love to watch you find pleasure in reading, even when you tune the rest of the family out while you are engrossed in a great story. One of my favorite things to do with you is sit side by side as we both enjoy our books. I can't wait to read your next post!
Your Loving Mom,
Soccer Mom
Dear Soccer Girl,
ReplyDeleteGreat blog! I'm also a teacher from North Carolina, and Follow Ms. Yollis on Twitter. I agree that your writing is excellent -- it's on a par with my 10th graders (it's actually better than several of them). Keep reading and blogging!
Hello, Soccer Girl!!! Congratulations on becoming a published author with this blog! I am an Educational Technology Specialist for Godley ISD in Godley, Texas. We are a pretty small school district with only about 1,800 students in the entire district. We have 4 campuses: an elementary school (PK-3), an intermediate school (4-6), a middle school (7-8), and a high school (9-12). Our town is about 30 miles south of Fort Worth, Texas. Farming and ranching are important economic activities in our community.
ReplyDeleteI wish you all the luck with your blog! Oh and, by the way, I love dogs!!! I have three. And guess what? One of mine is named Maizee!!! I spell it differently than you spell your dog's name, but I thought it was neat we have a dog that has the same name.
Good luck to you!

Dear Soccer Girl,
ReplyDeleteDo you know how very proud I am of you? Your blog is interesting and entertaining! Your readers and Mrs. Yollis might be surprised to learn what a good teacher you are too. Tonight you taught me what a blog is and how to access your site. You were very patient and gave excellent directions. This 73 year old grandma is learning new things from you about technology. Thank you! Your readers might also like to know that sometimes you help make up "detective" stories and act them out with your sister and brother. What fun! I think your love of reading helps nourish your very creative mind and your sweet spirit is reflected in all that you do. Carry on grand daughter! Can't wait to read more.
Love, Grammysam
